Tae Kwon Do is a modern martial art that originated from Korea. It was developed as a self-defence system characterized by high fancy kicks. Tae Kwon Do techniques and movements work with the mechanical and biological principles of the human body.
After its demonstrative participation in the Olympic Games in 1988 in Seoul and 1992 in Barcelona, Tae Kwon Do WTF became an olympic sport included in the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games.
In 2007, Karine Sergerie from Quebec became Canada's first female world champion in the sport.
